About Unknown Macc CIC
Music, creativity and local stories bring people together.
Unknown Macc CIC is a Community Interest Company based in Macclesfield. We use music, creative projects and the town’s cultural story to help people connect, build confidence and feel more involved in the place around them.
The projects matter because of the people they bring together.
Why We Started
Unknown Macc began with conversations about music, memory and connection.
Unknown Macc grew from conversations with people visiting Macclesfield because of Ian Curtis, Joy Division and the town’s musical heritage.
Over time, we realised many visitors weren’t simply coming to see places connected to the band. They were coming because Ian’s music had meant something to them personally.
Conversations often touched on mental health, loneliness, identity, loss and the role music had played during difficult periods of their lives. Ian communicated through music in a way that still resonates with people around the world today.
We believe that connection is important and worth continuing.
Our aim is to create welcoming spaces and projects where people can connect with others, share experiences and reflect in Ian’s hometown. Some will be visitors making a pilgrimage to Macclesfield. Others will be local people who may be struggling with isolation, poor mental health or simply looking for a sense of belonging.
We are a community project built around music, creativity, conversation and connection.
Alongside this, we want to celebrate Macclesfield’s cultural heritage, encourage positive tourism and support the independent businesses that make the town special.
We believe music can bring people together, start conversations and help people feel less alone.
People And Place
Macclesfield’s music story can help bring people together.
Unknown Macc was created to turn the interest in Macclesfield’s music story into something positive for local people and visitors.
We are not just here to celebrate the past. We want to use music, creativity and local stories to create opportunities now.
That means helping people learn, meet others, build confidence, reduce isolation and feel proud of where they live.
What Guides The Work
Everything comes back to people.
We are still a young CIC. The aim is to grow naturally, listen properly and make sure each project helps people feel welcomed, supported, confident or connected.

Using shared interests to help people talk, learn and connect.
Confidence
Creating welcoming activity where people can try something new at their own pace.

Opening up creative experiences that may otherwise feel out of reach.

Community Interest Company
Growing honestly and reinvesting locally.
Unknown Macc CIC is at the beginning of its journey. We want to build slowly, listen to the community and create work that can support itself over time.
Income from paid courses and future projects can help fund places, support community activity and develop the Macclesfield audio tour. Any surplus is reinvested into work that benefits people and communities in Macclesfield.
